I've always thought that if a board looks and feels
good in your hand that it will work good in the water. After 17 years of
shaping and some 10,000 boards later I still believe that's true.
But I've learned that good and unreal are worlds apart. It's often the
subtle things you can't see or feel that make those magic boards. That's
why I started shaping surfboards. As a young gremmie paying my dues at
Ocean Beach, I found that little changes I made to my ding repairs really affected
how the board rode. I was fascinated with the possibilities and soon my
friend's boards also became a source of experimentation. Some of it rather
hilarious, but still inspiring.
I've been fortunate. After high school in 1978, I moved to Santa Cruz
and fell in with an exciting and growing surf company. Before I knew it
I was competing professionally and learning how to shape boards. I learned
a lot by being totally immersed in the rigors of competition and the
disciplines of production shaping. The skills and insights
acquired along the way enabled me to begin producing boards under the Ward Coffey
Shapes label in 1990. Surfing and shaping duties continue to take me
around the world. The variety of waves, conditions and surfing styles I encounter
constantly influence and refine my shaping ideas. Be it a
performance shortboard, hybrid, or longboard I'm always ready to infuse design features
of past years with today's modern concepts, to push
the limits of what makes a board simply ride better. I invite you to check
out a Ward Board. Experience what I feel are shapes and designs that will
help your surfing progress, and make your time in the water more
enjoyable!
