WARD'S WORD

Spring, 2003
The single most important feature of any surfboard is the bottom curve from nose to tail. No other
feature has as dramatic an effect on a board's speed, how it paddles and catches waves, and how
responsive it feels on a wave.
Most surfers fit into one of two categories in their surfing approach. One being a down the line,
speed oriented, skatey style. The other is a more vertical, snappy, in the pocket style. The type
of wave you surf the most will influence your approach, but generally a surfer's approach is similar
in all types of surf. With that in mind, each approach requires a different bottom rocker. Down the line boards
are generally flatter from nose to tail. Vertical, in the pocket boards have more overall curve.
When ordering a board it is important to assess your approach and the waves you surf to dial in a curve that fits
your individual style. The best way to do this is to work with a shaper who keeps detailed measurements of bottom
rocker and can make accurate changes to those dimensions to suite your style and keep you progressing in the
direction you want to go.
